The standard work of reference for searches is a book published in with the title "General Alphabetical Index to the Townlands and Towns, Parishes & Baronies of Ireland", which was printed by Alexander Thom & Co. of Dublin, " for her Majesty's Stationery Office". Census name indexes and transcripts are available online.

A census name index is an index of names compiled from the census records, and enable you to search for a person by surname, forename and age. Transcripts are more detailed than indexes, and enable you to search across all the fields, such as occupation and address. This collection contains the records of the census taken in England and Wales in the year The images and index are provided by England and Wales Census, — The UK Census.

Each householder was required to complete a census schedule giving the address of the household, the names, ages, sex, occupations and places of birth of each individual residing in his or her accommodation. Inhouseholders were asked to give more precise details of the places of birth of each resident.

The index works the same way except that there is no book number. You can also use the census references to get straight to the page you want on findmypast. Go to the Person Search and select “Census Reference Search”. You enter the piece number as for ancestry, but in the folio number box you will need to enter book number.

Search: Census of This census includes Canada East (Quebec), Canada West (Ontario), New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Enter one or more search terms. You don’t need to fill in all the boxes. Wildcard character: * (e.g. John* for Johns, Johnsen.
